Maharashtra: The migrants who had been walking along the tracks slept on the tracks, an official said. They were run over by the passing train at 5.15 am today

Mumbai, May 8:

Sixteen migrant workers of a group of 21 were run over by a cargo train in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad district this morning, the railways has confirmed. The workers were returning to Madhya Pradesh, news agency PTI reported quoting an official.

The migrants who had been walking along the tracks slept on the tracks near Karmad, the official said. They were run over by the passing train at 5.15 am today at the district 360 km from Mumbai.

The Railway Ministry tweeted the driver tried to stop the train.

“During early hours today after seeing some labourers on track, loco pilot of goods train tried to stop the train but eventually hit them between Badnapur and Karmad stations in Parbhani-Manmad section. Injured have been taken to Aurangabad Civil Hospital. Inquiry has been ordered,” the Railway Ministry tweeted.

Injureds have been taken to Aurangabad Civil Hospital.

The rest of the labourers from the group of 21 who survived the accident as they were not on the tracks are being counselled by the police.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted “all possible assistance” is being provided. “Extremely anguished by the loss of lives due to the rail accident in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Have spoken to Railway Minister Shri Piyush Goyal and he is closely monitoring the situation. All possible assistance required is being provided,” PM Modi tweeted.

Though several states have been running “Shramik” special trains for migrants who need to return home for emergency reasons, many have started walking back on their own.

“Railway Protection Force and the police have reached the accident site,” the public relations officer of South Central Railway said.

In Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said no migrant worker should walk back home from big cities like Delhi.
