Srinagar,  October 8:

Defying all threats, the voters in Jammu and Kashmir gave  a big thumbs up to the democracy  with their  extraordinary participation in the opening phase of the four-phased Municipal Polls on Monday.

More than 56 per cent of the voters  exercised their franchise in the first phase of polling spread over to 13 districts in the State- Jammu, Rajouri , Poonch, Kupwara, Bandipore, Baramullah , Budgam, Srinagar, Anantnag , Leh and Kargil .

Leh, Kargil, Rajouri, Poonch , Jammu and Kupwara  made a statement when the people queued up  outside polling booths in large numbers without any sign of fear and determination to restore the grassroots democracy that had been eluding them because of their self-interests.

Today’s election process has  administered a big setback to the boycott camp including gun wielding militants, traditional boycott callers Hurriyat Conference, this time joined by National Conference and PDP .

The people ignored all these fears and calls  by coming out in large numbers to vote for the greatly empowered  local bodies.

The State is going to Municipal polls for the first time after a  big gap of 13  years – the last elections were held  in early 2005 .
