Jammu, March 8:

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met Governor N.N. Vohra at the Raj Bhavan here today.

During the course of their extensive discussions Chief Minister apprised Governor about various important developmental, security, and law and order management related issues and about certain matters which had come to notice during her recent tours to the districts in the Jammu and Kashmir Divisions.

These were essentially related to the firing and shelling from across the  border and the need to rehabiliate the displaced population . She also spoke of the  need for bunkers to provide immediate security cover to border residents in the state.

Regarding the security situation, she also touched upon March 4 killing of two militants and four civilians in Shopian that created a critical situation and that made her to rush to Srinagar to take stock of the security situation obtaining in the Valley . She said that she felt that there was a need  for better synergy between  various securoty agencies.

Governor discussed with Chief Minister issues relating to the now very long pending elections to Urban Local Bodies and the recently deferred elections to Panchayats. He is reported to have told her that despite her commitments she has not been able to hold the panchayat polls and that has  undermined the  grassroots democratic institutions . This was particularly worrisome as the Centre had made all arrangements for the polls and to provide adequate security  for the voters and others.

Governor re-iterated his concern about the need for enforcing visible transparency and accountability in the functioning of the entire administrative apparatus. This was in reference to the  recent reports of irregularities in the appointments in various  departments.
