The Mehbooba Mufti government on  Tuesday disclosed its plans to hold the panchayat elections in the first quarter of the next year, coinciding with the parliamentary polls by April .

This disclosure was made by  Chief Minister  during her meeting with Governor N N Vohra at Raj Bhavan here this evening. Although the official hand out did not mention the exact timing of the panchayat polls, but the sources said that the Chief Minister promised  that she has a time frame in mind of holding by April next year to break the jinx. These elections were scheduled  to be held early this year but could not be held as the Government  was in limbo and thereafter in the middl of dealing with the violent unrest.

Chief Minister who returned from the Valley also told Vohra that the situation in Kashmir was   improving rapidly  and there is a hope that the people would  push it further towards complete normalcy and peace  in the near future. She claimed that  a tangible impact has been made by the public pressure and some of the administrative actions in which the major dots were connected through the development projects.

It is understood that the Chief Minister was pleased with the  opening of schools, participation of the  students in sports events , and overall sense of normalcy  and the declining level of protests and shutdowns.

The official handout said that the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti discussed with Governor N. N. Vohra the overall situation in the Valley, the steps underway for re-energising the development projects and enabling the restoration of the severely disturbed schedules of the educational system, at all levels.

Considering the time lost the Governor urged sustained sharp focus on the implementation of the various works and development projects and the administrative apparatus working over time to catch up on all fronts.

Governor also discussed with the Chief Minister the likely timeframe for the conduct of elections to the urban and rural self-governing bodies.

In this context he stressed the importance of empowerment of the rural population through the effective establishment of the Panchayati Raj institutions. Chief Minister informed Governor that she is considering a time frame for the Panchayat elections, to be preferably held early next year, other things being equal.
