New Delhi, May 4:

 With 2,573 fresh cases and 83 fatalities in last 24 hours, the total number of coronavirus cases in India has increased to 42,836 on Monday, while the death toll has surged to 1,389, according to the latest data by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Of the total number of cases, there are 29,685 active cases, while 11,762 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals.

Maharashtra remains the worst affected state with 12,974 cases and 548 fatalities. Gujarat is placed second with 5,428 cases and 290 deaths. 

At least 4,549 cases have been reported in Delhi with 64 fatalities.

Madhya Pradesh has reported 2,942 cases with 165 deaths. 

At least 3,023 cases have been reported in Tamil Nadu with 30 deaths, while Rajasthan has reported 2,886 cases with 71 fatalities.

Earlier today, the Union Health Ministry said that recovery rate at 27.52 per cent with 11,706 COVID-19 patients cured till Monday evening. 

Taking about ferrying migrant labourers to respective hometowns, it added that they have advised that people must stay wherever they are during lockdown but in special cases allowed trains to function.
