Engineer-turned militant killed in Anantnag gunfight

An engineer turned has been killed on Wednesday during a brief gunfight in near highway town of Bijbehara in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

The slain militant was identified as Sameer Ahmad Dar, alias Basit, son of Gulam Rasool Dar resident of Marhama, Bijbehara. He was killed during a brief encounter with security forces between Bewra and Hatigam areas of Bijbehara early morning today, sources said.

The sources said that the militant was formerly an engineering student at a local university and had left his studies to join militant ranks. According to militant’s family, he had disappeared from his home almost two months ago.

Sameer is a third engineering student to die as a militant in recent years. Earlier, Masiullah Khan and Saifullah Ahangar – both residents of Tral sub-district and engineering students, had joined militants in Kashmir valley.
