Srinagar, December  14

Chief  Minister Mehbooba Mufti  on Wednesday   clearly stood on the side of the families of militants, who  , she said should be viewed differently than the armed militants, while admitting that Kashmir has experienced  “ excessive use of force in the past five months.”

Mehbooba Mufti was speaking at a police passing out parade in Lethpora, Pulwama in south Kashmir today, where she candidly admitted that excessive force had been used by the forces in the past five months. Equally important was her call to the state police to differentiate between  armed militants and their families .

This statement assumes greater significance  in view of the  Jammu and Kashmir government’s decision to clear the case of Khalid Muzaffar Wani , brother of the top militant leader Burhan Wani  for ex-gratia relief .

Mehbooba  Mufti  has been asking for the differentiation between militants and their families for long. She had even been  asking for  persuasion of the local militants to get back to the mainstream  rather than engaging them in encounters .  But today, she made a  statement that delivered a clear message to police, her party, people and opposition that  she would  not like any action against the families of the militants. Instead, the idea she has put forward is that  such families need to be treated with respect as do the other civilians .

She also sought the help of the state police in restoring peace  and   normalizing  further the situation in the Valley, which has suffered huge blow of death, destruction, and disruption  in economic and educational activities in the past five months  following the killing of Burhan Wani on July 8 .
