At a function held at the Raj Bhavan here today Governor N.N. Vohra, President of Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), J&K, felicitated representatives of Army, State and Central Police Forces, Education, Industry and Civil Society who have provided unstinting support to the Red Cross movement and contributed significantly to the successful organization of the Red Cross Mela which was recently held at Jammu.

Governor lauded Sh. Hemant Kumar Sharma, Divisional Commissioner Jammu and the Chairman of the Jammu IRCS, and his team, for their sustained efforts in promoting the activities of the Red Cross Society and generating resources to sustain this movement for the larger benefit of society. He thanked the Army, Central and State Police Forces and all the sponsors, individuals and organizations who had extended support for making the Red Cross Mela 2017-18 a great success.

Emphasising the high importance of the Red Cross movement, particularly for J&K State which has a vast and difficult geographical area, Governor observed that Red Cross trained Volunteers are the first responders for the victims of any disaster. He stressed enhanced efforts to train local boys and girls in providing first aid in any emergency.

Governor stressed the need for the Society’s activities to extend to all parts of the State and urged Sh. M.S. Rather, General Secretary IRCS, J&K State Branch to regularly organise Red Cross Melas in the Valley and Leh and Kargil districts so that the largest possible number of people get acquainted with the noble objectives of the Red Cross movement.

Earlier, Sh. Hemant Kumar Sharma gave a brief account of the activities of Red Cross in Jammu and informed that during this year’s Red Cross Mela a collection of more than Rs 62 lakh was generated through sale of Raffle Draw tickets and this resource will be used for enlarging Red Cross activities in the State.
