Two week interdisciplinary refresher course in Human Rights being organized by the UGC-HRDC and P.G. Department of Home Science, University of Jammu was inaugurated today. The beginning of the course coincides with 71st Anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights that is celebrated all over the world as “Human Rights Day”. It commemorates the day in 1948 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This year “Human Rights Day” is being celebrated with the theme “Stand up for Human Rights”.

The Chief Guest for the inaugural was Sh. Mukesh Singh, IGP, Jammu zone. He mentioned that the constitutional provisions, fundamental rights and directive principles of state policy all find reference in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and hence rights of all should be safeguarded in accordance with this declaration. He shared his experiences while serving on the National Human Rights Commission and while dealing with several cases of sensitive nature. He suggested that on the occasion on Human Rights Day all the participants should take a pledge to adhere to the principles of human rights for creating a better society and nation.

Prof. Rahul Gupta, Director UGC-HRDC University of Jammu in his address mentioned that refresher courses are an avenue for the participants to update their knowledge and information. He informed that the HRDC center of the University has been conducting courses since 2006 and the current course is the 19th refresher course. He added that the refresher course in Human rights is the most relevant in the present times and the college and university teachers should spread awareness about these rights among their students as well.

Dr. Samridhi Arora, Associate Professor, Department of Home Science and Course coordinator of the mentioned that the refresher course on human rights has been organized with an objective to sensitize and familiarize the college and university teachers with the human rights-based approach, the gender perspective and the systems approach. The course will focus on introduction to Human rights, Rights of Women and children and rights of other vulnerable and marginalized groups. She informed that during this course the participants will get an opportunity to interact and benefit from the varied experiences and views of eminent resource persons from reputed institutions, social organizations and judiciary like Supreme court of India, NLU, Delhi, Punjab University Chandigarh, Childline and NDF and other welfare organizations.

Dr. Sarika Manhas, Associate Professor, Department of Home Science and Course co-coordinator introduced  Sh. Mukesh Singh, Chief guest to the audience The formal vote of thanks was accorded by Sh. Ranjeet Kalra, teaching faculty UGC-HRDC, JU.

Ahtesham Hussain Bhat, Advocate and Mr. Vinay Sharma, SP South were special guests.

The proceedings of the event were conducted by Ms. Sunali Sharma, Research Scholar of Department of Home Science. Ms. Arpana Langeh, Ms. Kanchan Sharma, Ms. Asiya Abdullha, Ms. Vinish Malik assisted in the organization of the event.

Prominent among those who attended the refresher course inaugural were Prof. Neeru Sharma, President JUTA; Prof. Shashi Manhas, HOD Home Science Department;; Dr. Nirojini Bhat and Dr. Suresh K.Rao.
