SRINAGAR, JANUARY 25: Jammu and Kashmir has ordered that dredging of the river Jhelum be conducted from Verinag to Uri on scientific lines as it has been discovered that the embankment at Lasjan on Wednesday was due to hapzard dredging .
These instructions have been issued by the Minister for Disaster Management Javed Mustafa Mir on Thursday when he visited the damaged portion of the bund .
The government has already ordered an inquiry into the circumstances and causes leading to the caving in of the embankment at Lasjan.
The Minister, while taking a serious view of the matter, asked the concerned officers to ensure that restoration measures are taken up on war footing. He instructed the Department of Irrigation and Flood Control to conduct inspection of all embankments along the length of River Jhelum from Verinag to Uri to check occurrence of any such incident.
He gave directions to Chief Engineer I&FC to ensure that dredging of River Jhelum is done in a scientific manner and no lapse on this account will be tolerated.
