JAMMU, MARCH 27:

At the 8th Annual Inter-State (Northern Zone) Declamation Contest, organized by the Department of Higher Education at the Government P.G. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, the team of Mohd. Hashim and Prabhat Kumar from Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi, lifted the Silver Rolling Trophy which was instituted by Governor N. N. Vohra in 2010.

  The topic of the Declamation Contest was “Is Demonetization a success or Failure.”

The Runner-Up Trophy was bagged by the team comprising Sangpriya of Government College for Women, Parade and Kaneez Fatima of Government P.G. College for Women Gandhi Nagar. Governor N. N. Vohra, was the Chief Guest and Mrs. Usha Vohra, First Lady, was the Guest of Honour in the Valedictory function which was presided over by Prof. Anju Bhasin, Vice-Chancellor, Cluster University of Jammu.

Emphasizing the importance of student’s participation in such competitions for gaining confidence and their personality development, Governor observed that the Silver Rolling Trophy was instituted with the objective of providing a platform for the students to express their thoughts on contemporary issues and meet and interact with their counterparts from other institutions within and outside the State. He expressed satisfaction that in its journey of 8 years this event has got established. He particularly appreciated the participation of students from various remote areas of all the three regions of the State and from some of the neighbouring States.

Governor observed that speaking at public platforms enables students to acquire confidence which is helpful later when they appear in interviews. To provide opportunities to students from all parts of the State the Governor has instituted similar Rolling Trophies in other Universities and Colleges of the State.

Governor lauded the role of Principal Dr. Koushal Smotra, and all her predecessors in the past 8 years, for progressively enlarging and improving the annual Declamation Contest in every manner. He also appreciated the positive interest taken by the State Higher Education Department for supporting this event.

Highlighting the importance of providing quality education, Governor observed that it is vital for ensuring development of the State and urged the administration and academicians to thwart any negative influence which is detrimental to the academic advancement of the students.

 Governor urged Vice-Chancellor Prof. Bhasin to work for improving the academic environment in every manner so that the best opportunities are available to the youth.

Governor presented the Rolling Trophy to the winning team and also gave prizes to the other winners. He presented a cheque of Rs. 11,000 to Mohd. Hashim of Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi for being adjudged first. A cheque of Rs. 7500 to  Ms. Sangpriya of Govt. College for Women Parade, for being adjudged 2nd and a Cheque of Rs. 5000 to  Mohd. Atif Yamin of Jamia Milia Islamia for being adjudged 3rd . 1st , 2nd  and  3rd Consolation prizes were won by  Sonali Sain Seth of Govt. P.G. College Seema, Shimla, Prabhat Kumar of Jamia Milia Islamia and Kaneez Fatima of Govt. P.G. College Gandhi Nagar, respectively. A Cheque of Rs 2500 each was given to consolation prize winners.

Governor also presented mementos to Prof. Deepshikha Kotwal, HoD, School of Languages, Central University Jammu, Prof. Neetu Andotra, HoD Commerce University of Jammu, Dr. Pabitra K. Jena, Director School of  Economics, SMVDU, Prof. N.R. Sharma, former HoD Education, University of Jammu and Sh. S.C Sharma, former General Manager RBI who were the Jury Members and Prof. Jitendra Khajuria, Registrar Cluster University Jammu and Prof. Yasmin Ashai,  Nodal principal Amar Singh College, Srinagar; who were the Observers of the Declamation Contest.

Prof. Bhasin spoke on the occasion about the topic and about the Cluster University of Jammu.

Dr. Smotra, Principal, of the College, in her welcome address gave details about the Declamation Contest and stated that a total of 46 students from Punjab, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir had participated in this contest.

Dr. Satinder Singh, Principal, GGM Science College, Jammu presented a formal Vote of Thanks.

Earlier, students of the College presented a captivating cultural programme.

Sh. Asgar Hassan Samoon, Principal Secretary Higher Education and Prof. Z.A. Chat, Director Colleges, Principals of various colleges, college teachers and students were present on the occasion.
