New Delhi, December 17
Lt. Gen. Bipin Rawat will be the new Chief of Army Staff succeeding Gen. Dalbir Singh Suhag.
This announcement was made by the government on Saturday. This announcement was in conformity with the expectations regarding the new army chief.
Gen. Dalbir Singh’s tenure as the Chief of Army Staff saw new tensions with Pakistan and most spectacular attacks on the army camps in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly the fidayeen attacks on Uri and Nagrota army camps on September 18 and November 29 respectively. Even today, three soldiers were killed in an attack by terrorists in Pampore, near Srinagar.
Gen. Rawat is inhering the legacy of tough times for the army across the country, especially in Jammu and Kashmir where terrorism has peaked during 2016.
Gen. Rawat has experience of working in conflict situations in Kashmir and North- East.
