Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was way ahead of others leaders in the world to seize the seriousness of Covid-19 and take appropriate action is the keenest observation of Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen .
While comparing the response of other world leaders , including that of the USA, where Sen lives , the Nobel Laureate who had won this distinguished prize for his outstanding contribution in welfare economics in 1998, told India Today news channel: “Modi did very good” in responding to the health crisis that has gripped the world.
Sen is often seen as critic of economic policies of the Narendra Modi government, but he however, could not overlook the fact of Modi’s handling of the pandemic in India in terms to lockdown and mitigating suffering of the people.
He also clarified that the problem of poverty and the people suffering during the crisis , the images of the migrant labourers headed home on foot and related miseries, should not be laid at the doors of modi.
Sen told the interviewer Rajdeep Sardesai, who also is known for his criticism of Modi government’s policies, that ” It is not due to Modi.” This , e said was there in India for decades and referred to Baba Sahab Ambedkar ‘s remarks that the people at helm look for comforts of the people living in comfort zone , and never cared for the poor. This, according to sen is an old problem in India.
But, he handsomely credited Modi for handling the crisis the way he did, where several other world leaders were found struggling to cope with the rising impact of the pandemic of novel coronavirus.
