Ahead of elections for the Srinagar parliamentary constituency, the state election authorities have ordered suspension of class-work for four days in educational institutions which have been handed over to security forces for their accommodation.
An order issued by additional deputy commissioner Srinagar K KSidha, who is also the nodal officer for elections, said: “In view of the forthcoming parliamentary elections 2019, the classwork in educational institutions requisitioned under-section 160 of the representation of peoples Act 1951, will remain suspended from April 15 to 18”.
The order will be implemented in three central Kashmir districts which include Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal, which are going to polls in the second phase of parliamentary elections on April 18. Further, the class-work will also remain suspended for two days (April 17 to 18) in the educational institutions which have been designated as polling stations for the elections, officials said. “The order issued by the nodal officer election will be restricted to around 20 odd locations, including few schools and colleges,” an official said.
The authorities in Burn Hall higher secondary school have decided to close the institution for five days from April 16.
“We have three polling stations in our school but it is also designated as a distribution centre for Sonwar constituency. We will receive election material on April 16 which will be distributed on April 17 and voting will be done on April 18,” a school functionary said. He said the classwork will resume on Monday (April 22). “April 19 is Good Friday and our school observes it as a holiday. So our school will reopen on Monday,” he said.Chief education officer (CEO) Srinagar, Naseer Ali Malik said he didn’t receive the list of schools to be closed from April 15. “But we were informed that 10 schools will be closed,” he said. A senior official in Srinagar district administration said that revealing names of these 10 schools will be a “security risk” for the security forces.
