Jammu,  January 3:

The year-beginning fidayeen attack on CRPF camp at  Lethpora, Pulwama  in  south Kashmir  has become more of a mystery following claims by the  CRPF high officials that they had the prior intelligence about the attack .

Director General  of CRPF  R K Bhatnagar  and Special Director General  of the force in J&K S N Srivastava  told media that they knew that the camp was going to be the target on the night of #1st December  and the  personnel were alert .  The alertness prevented higher  casualties , they  claimed .

The men who fought  militants  and neutralized three of them- two locals , including  son of a policeman , and one Pakistani – know what they were facing in a sprawling campus of 160 acres . But the questions galore :  how could the terrorists enter  the campus , if there was intelligence  what preventive measures were taken to neutralize the terrorists before they could make it to the campus.

Answers must be found to these questions .

There is no point in doing the self-patting  and saying that  only five  CRPF personnel died and higher casualties were averted  speaks of their action on the actionable  intelligence . The  CRPF top brass and the political leadership defending all this  by claiming that their success was in elimination of three militants  owe an answer, was this tragic incident avertible . If it was so , then why the five CRPF men died .

What is needed is that the CEPF should introspect where the things went wrong  and why . Any attempt to  weave a story of success out of this failure would be a self-defeating exercise .
