Mohali: Renowned Punjabi comedian and actor Jaswinder Bhalla died on Friday morning at Fortis Hospital in Mohali due health-related ailments.

He was 65 years old.

Born on May 4, 1960, in Doraha city of Ludhiana district, Jaswinder Bhalla left an indelible mark on the Punjabi entertainment industry with his unique sense of humour and memorable characters. Reports suggest that he had been unwell for the past few months. The news of his demise has sent shockwaves through the Punjabi film industry and among his fans, with condolences pouring in on social media.

The last rites will be held on August 23 at 12 noon at the Balongi cremation ground in Mohali. A large number of fans and artists are expected to gather for his final farewell.

Jaswinder Bhalla started his acting journey in 1988 with the popular comedy series Chhankata, where he played the iconic character Chacha Chatra alongside Bal Mukand Sharma and Neelu. Over time, he became a household name for his comic timing and relatable humour in Punjabi entertainment.

He made his Punjabi film debut with Dulla Bhatti and went on to feature in numerous successful movies. Some of his most loved works include Chak De Phatte, Carry On Jatta, and Daddy Cool Munde Fool, which continue to be audience favourites.

Jaswinder Bhalla’s academic career
Beyond the world of cinema, Jaswinder Bhalla built an impressive academic career. He joined Punjab Agricultural University in 1989 as a lecturer in Agricultural Extension Education and eventually retired in 2020 as the head of the department.

He completed his BSc Agriculture (Hons) and MSc in Extension Education from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, in 1982 and 1985 respectively. Before his tenure at PAU, he worked for five years as AI/ADO in the Punjab Department of Agriculture. In 2000, he earned a Ph.D. in Agricultural Extension from CCSU, Meerut, as an in-service candidate.
