Jammu, January 25: The Jammu–Srinagar National Highway has been fully reopened for traffic on January 24, 2026, at around 11:00 PM, after remaining closed for 35 to 40 hours due to heavy snowfall.
The highway was closed on January 23 at around 5:00 AM because of snow accumulation on the road, which made travelling unsafe. During the closure, vehicles were stopped, stranded, and diverted at several places, causing delays for passengers and drivers.
To improve road conditions, authorities spread urea and salt on the road to stop black ice from forming. Teams from the National Highway Authority of India, Traffic Police, BRO, and the local administration worked together to manage the situation. Stranded vehicles and people were moved to safer places through towing and controlled movement.
During limited movement, around 500 vehicles were allowed to pass after proper checking and weather assessment, mostly in a convoy system.
Traffic movement was slow near Panthyal due to snow on the old Magarkote–Ukhral road. SSP Traffic National Highway Raja Adil Hamid said that a JCB machine has been sent to clear the snow, so that traffic moving in both directions can be separated and congestion can be reduced.
At present, the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway is fully open, and traffic is moving normally. Commuters have been advised to follow traffic instructions and travel carefully, as weather conditions may change.
