Srinagar, May 16: The Legal Metrology Department on Friday carried out a major inspection drive against imported and unlawful cigarettes across various parts of Srinagar, resulting in the seizure of nearly 350 cigarette packages for violation of packaging regulations.
According to officials, the enforcement teams conducted inspections at multiple shops and business establishments to check the sale of imported cigarette products that were allegedly being marketed without complying with mandatory labeling and declaration norms prescribed under the Legal Metrology Packaged Commodities Rules, 2011.
During the inspection, authorities found several cigarette packages in contravention of Rule 6 of the Legal Metrology Packaged Commodities Rules, 2011. The rule mandates that all packaged commodities must carry essential declarations, including details such as the name and address of the manufacturer or importer, maximum retail price (MRP), quantity, packaging date, and other consumer-related information.
Officials stated that the absence of proper labeling and mandatory declarations not only violates legal provisions but also affects consumer rights and transparency in trade practices.
Following the violations, the department seized around 350 cigarette packages and initiated further legal proceedings against the concerned traders and sellers.
The Legal Metrology Department reiterated its commitment to protecting consumer interests and ensuring fair trade practices in the market. Officials also warned traders and shopkeepers against the sale of non-compliant products, stating that strict action would continue against violators in future enforcement drives.
The department added that similar inspection campaigns will continue across the city in the coming days to curb the circulation of unlawful and improperly labeled products in the market.
