Union Home Minister Amit Shah concluded his two-day visit of Jammu region on Monday . Before he returned to Delhi , he delivered a profoundly emotional and practical message that the Narendra Modi government is always there for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, no matter what the situation might be
This was a continuation of the message that Modi had himself delivered on September 7, 2014 and subsequently on so many occasions that his government will always stand by for the masses of this territory . That was the time when floods had unfolded their fury in the Kashmir valley in its worst form in a century , and he had visited Srinagar amid heavy rains and never-before seen flooding .
Home Minister started his visit on Sunday evening when floods, cloudbursts and landslides had shown the scale of the devastation that they could cause .Nature has limitless fury in its store and it exhibited maximum of it , as per the human calculations. But then the best calculators in the world fall far short of mother Nature’s capacity.
Home Minister , as per his original schedule as made known in media ,was to undertake an aerial survey of the places and people hit hard by the natural disasters which Jammu region had started witnessing since the cloudburst at Chashoti , Kishtwar , one of the major stop overs on way to Machail Mata yatrs . The cloudburst swept land, homes and people, some accounted for , others still missing .The disasters kept rolling on in high speed to Kathua , Samba , Udhampur, Reasi, Rajouri, Poonch and Jammu district itself .
Jammu presented a scene of complete death and destruction . The human effort to save lives and property against flash floods and landslides had fallen short . That happens always . Nature surprises and shocks people beyond their nightmarish calculations.
As of today, these disasters have created new problems , ranging from rescue , relief , restoration , reconstruction and rehabilitation . The nature interrupted the journey of development, as many bridges have disappeared , rads washed away and thousands rendered homeless. It is an enormous task, the completion of which would consume time and energy and , of course , funds .
For Jammu and Kashmir, these disasters pose several other challenges which often get obscured by the immediate task of dealing with the crisis. There always are security concerns as there are forces ready to pounce on such issues , exploit them . That is a challenge to the national security . In the aftermath of the 2014 flooding , many inimical elements had exploited the nature’s fury to incite anti-India sentiments .
Amit Shah dealt with both the issues in his own style .. He visited the places and people affected by the devastation caused by floods and landslides , and held two separate meetings with officials regarding the relief and rehabilitation of the people, restoration of connectivity assets , and also to review the security situation .He really put his feet on ground to understand the situation and find remedial measures.
Home Minister’s assurance to the J&K government and people that the Modi government will take care of all their needs and will bring back their life back on tracks , it defined much beyond the Centre helping the Union Territory of J&K.
Although that remains the primary responsibility of the Centre to help the states caught in such distressing situation , but Home Minister said and meant something more- it was reiteration of the Modi government’s commitment to the people of J&K where it has always gone beyond the rule book to help it . This has been visible since 2014 , and more so particularly after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 .
Amit Shah’s message is that of the resilience .
