JAMMU: The essence of democracy lies in the governance of the people, by the people, and for the people. However, the BJP-led government has distorted this definition in today’s political landscape, where the functioning of democratic processes in any state is subject to the political position of the BJP in that state. Jammu and Kashmir, along with Maharashtra, serve as prime examples of this. If our aim is to serve the people and fullfill their aspirations, no need to wait for election, let us come together and form a “Government of people’s Heart”
This was stated by Manish Sahni, the Unit President of Shiv Sena (UBT) while participating in an All-Party Meet in Jammu.
Sahni emphasized that the democratic process in Jammu and Kashmir has been continuously undermined. After the Assembly elections, there are indications that the elections for Panchayats and Urban Local Bodies may be delayed, primarily due to the political maneuvering by leaders of the state’s BJP unit.
Sahni stated, “Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a climate of authoritarianism and arbitrary decisions, leaving the common people feeling helpless, with no one to hear their concerns.” The last Assembly elections were held in 2014.
In light of this situation, it is the collective responsibility of all opposition parties to form a “Parallel Government” that prioritizes the interests and concerns of the people, he added.
Sahni proposed the appointment of parallel ministers for various departments in each district, along with two coordinators from Jammu and Kashmir. He also suggested the formation of a core committee to outline the framework of this “Parallel Government” and urged for its speedy announcement to bring solace to the people.
Sahni highlighted the historical significance of the “Parallel Government” in the Quit India Movement of 1942, which became a potent force and a notable feature of India’s struggle for freedom. In 1942, similar parallel governments were established in various parts of the country, including Uttar Pradesh and Bengal, with the primary aim of liberating India from British colonial rule, providing capable governance, and safeguarding the rights of its people.
