SAMBA, JUNE 07: Recent reports regarding contaminated water supply to 400 families have raised significant concern among residents. However, District Administration Samba has clarified that it took prompt action to address the problem and the underlying circumstances.
The Ground Service Reservoir (GSR) at Chumba Dassain, built approximately 45 years ago, recently experienced damage to its dome slab due to unpredictable heavy wind storms on the night of June 5-6, 2024. This natural event exacerbated existing vulnerabilities and led to the temporary deterioration of the structure.
As soon as the damage was reported, Deputy Commissioner Samba, Abhishek Sharma immediately directed the Executive Engineer of Jal Shakti to take swift action. Temporary repairs using GI sheets were already in place; however, the recent storm damaged these measures. Despite this, the response was prompt and effective.
The damaged areas were permanently sealed with cement concrete to prevent further contamination. Additionally, a manhole cover was installed to safeguard against any future incidents.
Furthermore, the storage tank underwent a comprehensive cleaning and chlorination* process to ensure the water quality was restored to safe levels promptly.
Moreover, it is pertinent to mention here the repair and renovation of the tank’s dome had already been proposed in the district capex plan for 2024-25.
Contrary to claims of negligence, proactive measures were already in motion to address the vulnerabilities. The quick response and the inclusion of long-term structural repairs in the district capex plan assures the safety and well-being of the residents.
