Srinagar: 09.01.2026: Member of Parliament Chowdry Mohammad Ramzan attended a meeting with the representatives of the Food Corporation of India (FCI), Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC), and the Principal Secretary, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department, UT of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, on the subject “Storage of Foodgrains: Existing Infrastructure and Future Strategy” in the UT of A&N Islands.

The Hon’ble MP’s were accorded a warm welcome and were felicitated by the top officials of the UT Administration of Andaman and Nicobar Islands at the outset of the interaction.
The discussion focused on the overall development and supply position of essential commodities in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, keeping in view its unique logistical and geographical challenges. Deliberations were held on strengthening existing storage infrastructure, future capacity enhancement, and ensuring seamless movement and availability of foodgrains.
Hon’ble MP raised a specific query regarding the rental expenditure being incurred on private storage facilities and sought detailed data on rent payments, outstanding rent balance, and the financial implications thereof. He stressed the need for transparency, cost-efficiency, and timely creation of permanent and scientific storage infrastructure to reduce dependence on private godowns.
Special emphasis was laid on strict quality control measures and regular inspections carried out by FCI through dedicated quality control teams, to ensure that foodgrains supplied to the islands meet prescribed standards and remain safe for public consumption. The role of continuous monitoring, scientific storage practices and coordinated efforts among concerned agencies was highlighted.
Hon’ble MP underscored the importance of a robust, quality-driven and resilient storage and supply mechanism to ensure food security and uninterrupted availability of essential commodities for the people of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
