The last leader of the Soviet Union before its dissolution has died in Moscow at age 91. “Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev died this evening after a severe and prolonged illness,” the Central Clinical Hospital said, according to state media. Gorbachev was the first and only president of the Soviet Union and is credited for lifting the Iron Curtain and ending the Cold War.
