Jammu , October 02:

The Indian army chief Gen. M M Naravane has cautioned that the  situation on the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir that divides the Union Territory between India and Pakistan  that the recent incidents of ceasefire violations would threaten situation returning to the pre-February 25 level.

It is  for the first time that the Indian army chief has spoken in these terms , while not long ago he had maintained that the ceasefire between the Indian and Pakistani armies on the LoC was holding. What is threatening the situation is two incidents of ceasefire violations in J&K by  Pakistani army. This has renewed the fears of  exchange of fire returning to the LoC that had stayed quiet since the reiteration of the November 26, 2003 ceasefire on February 25, 2021.

The joint statement of the Directors General of Military Operations  of India and Pakistan had committed that the two sides will cease the hostilities along the LoC , and the statement had also promised that it would pursue the  cooperation in other areas. This statement was hailed both in  India and Pakistan and also in western countries as the repeated exchange of fire on the LoC had resulted in loss of lives and properties on both the sides and elevated the tensions to new heights.

But, in the recent past, Pakistan has started pushing armed terrorists to the Indian side and also violated ceasefire. This has created a very damaging situation at the borderline and the fears that the situation  may return to the pre-February 25 level have gained a currency.

The army chief said, while talking to media in Leh , that “ there was no ceasefire violations by Pakistani army from February till June-end . But  of late there’ve been increased infiltration attempts that weren’t supported by ceasefire violations . In ten days there’ve been two ceasefire violations. Situation is regressing to pre-February days.”

He also pointed out that  the Indian Army  has “conveyed through hotline messages & DGMO level talks that take place every week that they (Pakistan) should not give support to any terror-related activities.
