COVID-19 India: The number of people who have been infected with the novel coronavirus rose to 1965 today
New Delhi, April 2:
India reported its 50th novel coronavirus-linked death this morning, according to data from the Union Health Ministry; 12 of those deaths were reported in the past 24 hours. Across the country 1,965 cases of coronavirus, or COVID-19, infection have been confirmed, with 328 in the past 24 hours.
The number of people who have been discharged after treatment at various hospitals and medical colleges is now 151.
On Wednesday the country recorded its highest single-day increase in the number of COVID-19 positive patients – 437 were reported.
Among states Tamil Nadu saw the biggest jump, with 160 testing positive in a 24-hour period. The state has, so far, registered 234 COVID-19 cases. One death has been linked to the virus and six have recovered after contracting it.
Other states that saw big jumps in the number of confirmed cases were Maharashtra; the state reported 86 new cases on Wednesday to take its total to 335. At least 13 have died from the virus so far and 42 have recovered.
Delhi and Andhra Pradesh also showed massive increases, with 55 new cases in the national capital on Wednesday and 46 in the southern state.
In Delhi there are a total of 152 active coronavirus cases, with two deaths and six recoveries. Andhra has 86 cases with one death and one recovery.
Kerala, from where the first COVID-19 case in India was reported, has 265 active cases, an increase of 31. Two deaths have been linked to the virus with 25 having recovered after treatment.
The nationwide spike comes after thousands attended a large religious gathering in south Delhi’s Nizamuddin earlier this month.
The gathering at the Markaz Nizamuddin, the Delhi office of Islamic sect Tablighi Jamaat, has been linked to over 130 cases and seven deaths.
In total, 2,371 members of the group have been identified in different states, the government has said. Testing and isolation of some of these members is ongoing and a search is on for others who have dispersed across the country.
Worldwide the virus has infected over 9.3 lakh people and killed nearly 50,000.
