India recorded its biggest single-day jump in new coronavirus cases and deaths with 9,996 fresh infections and 357 patients dying, taking the country’s tally to nearly 2.8 lakh cases. This is the ninth consecutive day that the country – fifth worst-hit by the pandemic – reported over 9,000 COVID-19 cases in a single day. More than five million people across India have been tested for COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, the government has said. On Wednesday, a record 1,51,808 samples were tested, officials said.

A total of 8,102 patients have died in India due to the highly infectious illness so far. A majority of these deaths have been recorded from Maharashtra, the country’s biggest coronavirus hotspot, where 3,483 patients have died so far.
On Wednesday, Maharashtra’s tally touched the 94,000-mark with 3,254 new patients. In Mumbai, the country’s worst affected city by the pandemic, the count of cases stands at 52,667 with 1,857 deaths.
The Uddhav Thackeray government in Maharashtra has emphatically denied all reports of a community transmission. The state, its health minister Rajesh Tope has said, is tracing every case through the “3T principle — Aggressive Tracing, Testing and Isolation and Treatment”.
Delhi has India’s third highest number of cases but there is no community spread in the national capital, a top official in the Union Health Ministry has said. Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain – after saying that half the coronavirus cases in the national capital cannot be traced to any source – on Wednesday said: “”There is transmission in the community, but if it is community transmission or not that can be declared by Centre only, it is a technical term.”
Tamil Nadu on Wednesday yet again recorded the biggest single-day jump with 1,927 fresh patients testing positive in 24 hours, taking the state’s tally to 36,841. The southern state has the second highest number of cases in India.
Uttar Pradesh, which is one of the most densely populated states, registered biggest single-day spike in the number of deaths linked to the illness with 20 patients dying. The state, which has recorded over 11,000 cases, have reported 321 deaths so far.
A total of 1,41,029 patients have recovered so far. On Wednesday, the number of those who have recovered overtook the active COVID-19 cases in the country for the first time.
Globally, the number of coronavirus cases have crossed the 74-lakh mark as number of country prepared to reopen after months of lockdown.
India ranks fifth in the world in terms of COVID-19 cases, after the United States, Brazil, Russia and the United Kingdom.
The United States – epicentre of the pandemic – has reported over 20 lakh cases so far and over 1 lakh deaths.
