Jammu, October 29 : A mammoth wrestling competition was held at Tacharwana village in Akhnoor tehsil, today.
On the occasion, Chairman, Team Jammu, Zorawar Singh Jamwal was the chief guest while SDPO, Akhnoor, Mohan Sharma and DySP, DAR, Jammu, K D Bhagat were the guests of the honour. SHO, Police Station, Akhnoor, Inspector Harjeet Singh was the special guest on the occasion.
A total of 90 bouts worth cash rewards of Rs 12 lakh were held in different weight categories. Besides budding wrestlers from Jammu, Kathua, Reasi and Samba districts, renowned wrestlers from Punjab, Haryana and New Delhi connected the bouts and received cheering applause from jam-packed gathering.
Outstanding wrestler Pritpal from Punjab won the final bout with cash price of 1.5 lakh after defeating another budding wrestler Monu from New Delhi. While second bout with cash prize of Rs1.4 lakh held between wrestlers Pradeep Splander and Shota Ghani remained inconclusive with referee declaring both as joint winners. The third highest bout having cash prize of Rs 1.3 lakh was won by Ravi Beara after defeating rival Beeniya Pahalwaan, Jammu.
While speaking, Team Jammu chief Zorawar Singh Jamwal said that traditional sports like wrestling are regaining its glory and becoming popular among Jammu youth day by day. He said that these types of competitions change the mind of young generation and keep them away from drugs. He said that sports are not only beneficial for overall physical growth but lately it has emerged as a big incentive in shaping careers. He called upon the gathering especially elected Sarpanchs and Panchs to organize sports activities after short intervals so that rural youth can get opportunities to exhibit their talent and make sports as their career.
SDPO, Akhnoor, Mohan Sharma and DySP, DAR, K D Bhagat, in their respective his addresses said that these types of events rejuvenate rich cultural values and also refrains young blood from taking drugs which is now a bigger social menace. They also highlighted the number of sports activities that have been under taken by J&K Police department to connect youth and guide them not fall prey of drug menace.
The members of Dangal Committee, Tacharwana that organized mega event present on the occasion included K K Sharma, Bodh Raj, Muneer, Kaka Ram, Kasturi Lal, Jagdish Raj, Ashok Kumar, Madal Lal, Suraj Malhotra, Surinder Sharma, Babishan Singh and Pershant Sharma.
