Srinagar, May 26: The residents around world famous Dal Lake Srinagar today woke up to disturbing news when they saw thousands of dead fishes floating over the lake.
The reason for mass death of fishes is said to be thermal stratification.
The locals said that they haven’t seen such a thing in their lifetime. “We are absolutely in shock after witnessing thousands of dead fishes floating on Dal Lake and foul odour was spreading all over,” said a local resident.
Till a couple of day back, Dal Lake a source of attraction for G-20 delegates who enjoyed the beauty of the lake and also had Shikara ride. But only a day after they left Dal Lake is again on talks but for wrong reasons.
Officials from Fisheries department said that this has happened due to thermal stratification-a change in the temperature at different depths in the lake.
“The pollution and increase of weeds decreases concentration of oxygen in a lake. It has also happened in Nigeen Lake in the past,” said an official.
