Jammu, October 3, Several opposition parties in Jammu and Kashmir in their meeting in Jammu on Tuesday resolved to take to streets to press for their constitutional rights as they alleged that the Government of India has deliberately denied the people of their right to have elections and elect their people.
“ We want to tell the people across the nation that how in the name of integration of J&K with the rest of the nation , the Centre has kept the Union Territory out of the purview of the Constitution of India, as the basic right of having an elected government has been trampled upon,” said M Y Tarigami , who acted as spokesperson for the opposition at the meet . Incidentally, he also is the spokesperson of the Gupkar Alliance that seeks to reverse arogation of Article 370.
Dr Farooq Abdullah, who had convened the meeting against the backdrop of no signs of Assembly polls , and uncertainty over Panchayat and Urban Local Bodies polls in Jammu and Kashmir , however refused to comment on the Article 370 , saying that it is “ sub-judice”. Currently, the Supreme Court is mulling on the arguments and counter-arguments on the Article 370 , and is likely to deliver its verdict on it in next few weeks. The Kashmir-centric parties are hoping for a verdict n their favour.
National Conference president Farooq Abdullah who also is MP from Srinagar , wondered over the “ double standards” of the government , as he observed that the situation is very nice and peaceful if the ambassadors of foreign countries visit Kashmir , but it is bad if elections are to be held . Whatis this?”, he asked .
The opposition parties were united in seeking early elections, failing which they would take to streets to let the nation now what J&K is undergoing under the BJP rule.
