Srinagar, August 12: Sarla Bhat, a 27-year-old Kashmiri Pandit nurse from Anantnag, worked at the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Soura, Srinagar.

She was abducted on 18.04.1990 from Habba Khatoon Hostel of SKIMS Soura and her bullet-ridden body was found lying in the thoroughfare at Umar Colony Mallabagh, Soura the following morning.

She was abducted from the institute’s hostel by terrorists affiliated with the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF). Her deadbody, bearing bullet wounds was found on April 19, 1990, in downtown Srinagar, with a note falsely labeling her a police informant. A case FIR No. 56/1990 was registered at Police Station Nigeen, Srinagar.

Her killing was part of a broader campaign of violence against Kashmiri Pandits during the 1990 insurgency, aimed at instilling fear and driving the community out of the Kashmir Valley. Even after her death, her family faced threats, with locals warning them against attending her cremation.

Sarla was a young independent girl, who defied terrorists’ diktat of quitting the job and leaving the valley. She openly challenged the authority of terrorists of JKLF, which led to her gruesome killing.

The investigation carried out by the concerned local Police Station could not bring out the actual perpetrators, because of which the investigation of the case was transferred to SIA, J&K, last year, by the competent authorities.

As part of the ongoing investigation into the case, the State Investigation Agency (SIA), has launched searches at multiple locations in District Srinagar, today.

These strategic searches which were conducted at 8 locations throughout District Srinagar have resulted in the recovery of some incriminating evidences, which will help in unearthing the whole terrorist conspiracy with an ultimate aim to deliver Justice to the victim and her family. In the world of criminal jurisprudence , it is a typical case of Justice delayed, but not denied.

The efforts are a part of the unwavering commitment of SIA J&K aimed at furthering the resolve shown by the J&K LG administration to identify the actual perpetrators behind these heinous terror acts and to prosecute them under law.
