Jammu, Jan. 17: The Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of Jammu, successfully organized a three-day workshop on “Writing Skills” for the students of Semester I of the Five-Year Integrated Post-Graduate Programme in Mathematical Sciences from 15th to 17th January 2026. The workshop was conducted as a part of the course “Communication Skills” included in the students’ curriculum. The main objective of the workshop was to strengthen students’ academic and professional writing abilities through focused lectures and practical training.

The entire idea and concept of the workshop were conceived by Prof. Sadaf Shah from the Department of English, who also conducted and coordinated the workshop. Prof. Sadaf Shah played a key role in planning the sessions, inviting the resource persons, and ensuring the smooth conduct of the programme. She also formally welcomed the Chief Guest and all the invited resource persons, highlighting the relevance of writing skills for students of all disciplines, including the mathematical sciences.

The workshop commenced on Thursday, 15th January 2026, with an Inaugural Session, which was graced by the Chief Guest, Prof. Romesh Kumar, Dean, Faculty of Mathematical Sciences, University of Jammu. In his address, Prof. Romesh Kumar emphasized the vital role of writing skills in achieving academic excellence, communicating research effectively, and succeeding in professional life. He encouraged students to take writing seriously as an essential academic skill rather than viewing it as a secondary requirement.

Following the inaugural session, Dr. Disha Sharma from Centre for Women Studie’s, University of Jammu delivered an insightful lecture on Category Grouping, explaining how ideas can be organized logically to improve clarity and coherence in writing. She stressed that proper organization of thoughts is the foundation of effective academic writing. The second session of the day was conducted by Dr. Pooja Kumari from GDC Khor, Jammu, on Avoiding Ambiguity and Using Proper Signposting Techniques. Her session focused on helping students make their writing clear, precise, and reader-friendly by avoiding vague expressions and using appropriate connectors and transitions.

On Friday, 16th January 2026, Dr. Simran Kour from the Department of English conducted a detailed session on Proposal Writing for Higher Studies. She guided students on how to write strong academic proposals and statements of purpose, explaining their structure, language, and key components. The post–tea break session focused on Recording the Minutes of Meetings. Dr Sana Lone from the Dept. of English University of Jammu delivered a lecture where students learned about accuracy, conciseness, and formal writing required for official and professional documentation.

The final day of the workshop, Saturday, 17th January 2026, featured a lecture by Dr. Neena Vij from the Central University of Jammu on Well-Knit Logical Sequence and Narrative Sequence. The session helped students understand how ideas should flow smoothly and logically in both academic and non-academic writing, enabling them to develop well-structured and coherent texts.

The workshop concluded with a Valedictory Session, during which students shared their feedback and reflections. The participants appreciated the practical orientation of the sessions and found the workshop extremely helpful in improving their writing skills. They acknowledged that the workshop, being a part of their Communication Skills course, added significant value to their academic learning and would be beneficial for higher studies, research work, and professional communication.
