Home Minister Amt Shah has lived up to high expectations of a vast majority of the people that they had pinned on his two-day visit to the region from April 30. He touched on the issues that concern the people and the region as they recognized that they wanted to live a progressive life with opportunities visiting them at their doorsteps , at the same time , he did talk about politics rooted in the yearnings of the people in the past , present and future.

The Home Minister’s vit was a billed as a big-time event for the people of the region , as it as essentially to attend first-ever international exposition of holy relics of Lord Buddha on Buddh Purnima day- May 1, 2026. This event had a very big religious , cultural and social meaning for the people of Ladakh, especially Buddhist community. At the regional level , it was also a significant moment for other communities because the international events propel the whole region at an international level.. And after decades , Ladakh was in the international spotlight for good reasons – earlier it was in focus for the 1999 Kargil war and , four and a half-long years military standoff with China.

Days before he landed in Ladakh on Thursday- April 30 – Ladakh had got five more districts – Nyoma, Changthang , Drass, Zanskar and Sham as per the approval of Ministry of Home Affairs under the leadership of Amit Shah of August 26, 2024 . Their deputy commissioners and superintendents of police were also appointed in less than 24 hours after the creation of the new districts .This decision is not only aimed at decentralizing the administration and embracing the remotest of the remotest areas in this remote region of high-ranges of Himalayas , but a statement that the country cares for the last man in the last village.

This is extremely important for Ladakh which had been in the forefront of Indo-Sino and India-Pakistan wars .They need assurances and reassurances that apart from the army and ITBP , there is w a hole of nation approach in uplifting their status in development governance . The development helps them reassert their identity as Indians .

They have been thorough patriots who helped the armed forces in the times of war or war-like situations , but they never invoked their separate identity Like all local areas ,they are quite possessive about their culture, traditions and environment . These concerns are genuine as they want a perfect balance between their urge for development , connectivity with the rest of the world in this internet and preservation of their centuries-old culture amid high mountains and glaciers.

Amit Shah ‘s words : “ Ladakh is not merely a geographical region; it is a living laboratory of Buddhist Culture and compassion ,” will resound in the region and beyond for generations . Buddhism is integral to Ladakh. Monasteries and prayer wheels in Leh and other places in the region- alongside roads, hill tops and villages bear a testimony to these words on ground. He did point out that through its four major traditions – Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya, and Gelug – Ladakh has illuminated the path to salvation .,” and added with emphasis that “ Ladakh’s heritage demonstrates that, amidst conflict and turmoil , the path of peace and compassion alone can offer the ultimate solution.”

Now comes the political part . Here again Home Minister’s stress was on development ,environment and uplifting the standard of living of the people of Ladakh.
On April 30 -on the first day of his visit Home Minister held a meeting with key political leaders of Ladakh .As per a social media post of LG Ladakh V K Saxena , the Home Minister , during the meeting called for focused approach to sustainable development .
“ Largescale plantation and water security were identified by Home Minister as key pillars for overall development of Ladakh . . The ongoing work to create 50 water bodies under in different villages under Project Him Sarovar and recent plantation drive were shared with Home Minister , which he appreciated as a positive measure.”
The focus on the sustainable development answers all questions on the political area discussions centered around statehood and sixth schedule . Some quarters are asking for this , forgetting that they were on the frontline in demanding UT for the region as they were feeling suffocated in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. They were part of the erstwhile state until August 2019 , and the grant of UT status was purely as per their wishes . They wanted separation from J&K, the state, because they were feeling neglected and disempowered in all aspects . They also felt that their traditional culture and heritage too were under assault by radical influence which had intruded into the Kashmir Valley from Pakistan .Now when they have got the status and development is at an unprecedented scale , it is time for them to reflect whether what they are asking will revert them to old days.
That is a food for thought.
