Mehbooba poses tough questions to those sermonising women
“I recently heard an audio message from a Kashmiri Mufti sahab expressing concern over reports of women allegedly selling themselves for a few hundred rupees and calling for police intervention. If women are being sexually exploited, criminal action is clearly necessary. But policing alone cannot address the roots of such desperation. We must also ask what drives a woman to such circumstances. The Islamic response to poverty is not simply condemnation. It is compassion, charity and collective responsibility. This is where our religious institutions and community structures need to do much more.”
