All sections of the society need to pitch in for the protection of  Human Rights –  Dr Jamwal

The inaugural function of the two weeks Refresher Course in Human Rights for College and University teachers being organized by UGC HRDC in collaboration with the Department of Home Science was held today. Dr. S.D. Singh Jamwal, ADGP, Security, J&K was the Chief Guest of the inaugural function. Dr.Jamwal while delivering his presidential address observed that all sections of the society need to pitch in for the protection and propagation of Human Rights. Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, he said that ‘the character of a nation is reflected by how it treats its vulnerable. He also added that the safety and security of the vulnerable and marginalized sections of society should be the focus of all nations. He appreciated the University of Jammu for organizing a course on Human Rights that holds great significance in contemporary times.  He was of the view that teachers are agents of change and are the torch bearers of Human rights as they ensure that their students learn principles of equity and equality; and are sensitized towards the various facets of human rights.  Prof. RajniDhingra, Dean Research Studies, University of Jammu, also graced the inaugural function.

 Prof. Sundeep K Pandita, Director, UGC-HRDC, University of Jammu in his address highlighted the importance of human rights for society. He was also of the view that not only fundamental rights but Directive principles and fundamental duties of the Indian constitution are important. He also shared with the audience the working of the centre and mentioned that the centre is dedicated to running quality courses that are of utility to the participants. Earlier in her welcome address, Prof. SamridhiArora, Head of the Department of Home Science, University of Jammu, (Coordinator of the course) gave the objectives and details of the course to the participants. She apprised that the course will familiarize the participants with the human rights-based approach, the gender perspective and the systems approach. The focus of the course will be on the theme for Human Rights Day 2021 i.e Equality-Reducing inequalities, Advancing Human Rights. She also enlightened that the sessions will be aimed at developing an understanding of Human rights and their application in the field by the participants with the help of experts from the field of Human rights. She was of the belief that the participants would be better equipped to perform their role as human rights educators in higher education. Dr SarikaManhas, Associate Professor (Deputy coordinator of the Course) introduced the Chief Guest of the occasion to the audience. Sh. RanjeetKalra, teaching faculty, UGC HRDC, JU presented a formal vote of thanks. The 2-week course will be coordinated by Prof. SamridhiArora and Dr.SarikaManhas from the Department of Home Science, University of Jammu. The proceedings of the program were conducted by Ms Kanchan Sharma and Ms.Vinish Malik, Research Scholars of the Department of Home Science, JU .
