Srinagar, November 6: Jammu and Kashmir legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution calling for restoration of the special status of J&K that was abrogated on August 5, 2019 , setting a stage for contentious narrative on the issue between the Centre and the newly elected government in the UT.
The resolution, in a strategic maneuvering , was moved by National Conference’s senior leader and Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary and seconded by Minister for Education Sakina Masood , thus conveying the message that the resolution had support across J&K. Surinder hails from Jammu region , while Sakina is one of the senior most leaders of National Conference in Kashmir.
The resolution read: “ That the legislative Assembly reaffirms the importance of the special status and constitutional guarantees, which safeguarded the identity , culture , and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, and expresses concern over their unilateral removal.”
It also stated : “ This Assembly calls upon the Government of India to initiate dialogue with the elected representatives of people of Jammu and Kashmir for restoration of special status , constitutional guarantees and to work out mechanisms for restoring these mechanisms.”
And underlined :”The Assembly emphasizes that any process for restoration of must safeguard both national unity and the legitimate aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”
The resolution was passed with a voice vote amidst slogan shouting by BJP members who were on their feet and subsequently entered well of the House.
