Jammu, July 30:

Artemis Cardiac Care (ACC), a unit of Artemis Hospitals Gurgaon, has a strong team of expert interventional cardiologists as well as cardiac surgeons led by Dr. Manjinder Sandhu, Medical Director and Director of Cardiology, came forward and partnered with ASCOMS to bring best-in-class medical facilities for the patients of Jammu and Kashmir. This is a step towards the betterment of the citizens of the state so that they can avail the best treatment options and need not travel too far. The prevalence of CHD in the Indian subcontinent is presently one of the highest and is further on the increase. In the state of Jammu and Kashmir, the population, like any other developing community, is undergoing lifestyle changes, but the unusual stress and strain of the last 15 years of the disturbed situation in the state apparently has contributed to increasing the prevalence of CHD. Hence, it is very important to provide this facility at their doorstep. According to Dr. Manjinder Sandhu, Medical Director and Director of Cardiology at Artemis Cardiac Care, “As we all know, according to a recent study done by the Global Health Research Institute, it suggests that J&K has recorded 29.6% of deaths due to heart-related ailments. The study further reports that 25% of deaths occur in the age group of 25–69 years. As an organization, we are committed to providing the best cardiac care facility in the nooks and corners of the country so that any citizen should not remain deprived of timely medical care.” According to Artemis Cardiac Care & ASSCOMS “This will be a cornerstone of a long-term collaboration to optimise healthcare outcomes for patients in Jammu & Kashmir.” The aim of this joint venture is to make the city more convenient for its citizens so that they do not need to migrate to some bigger city because of the lack of medical facilities. In his opening address, Dr. Pavan Malhotra, Director-Principal, ASCOMS, thanked the gathering and expressed my heartiest gratitude and appreciation to all who had gathered here to witness the efforts and achievements, which were described as a “dream come true.” He further stated that this dream has come true to its fullest culmination after a couple of months of hard work, determination, perseverance, and focus on achieving this noble goal in pursuit of the 1948 declaration of the World Health Organization (WHO), which defined health as a “state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease.” He lauded the efforts of the great visionary of J& K, Late Shri Dharam Vir Batraji, who has given this most Page 2 of 2 precious gift to the people of Jammu. He also appreciated the professional guidance received from Artemis Heart Care Centre for establishing this Comprehensive Cardiac Care Centre by the name of ASCOMS-Artemis Cardiac Care Centre. He further stated that our goal is to be an integrated, best-practice regional health system—providing a continuum of services from preventive and primary care to tertiary hospital-based care. But we cannot allow the system as a whole to be obsessed only with short-term gains. We need to meet immediate costs, but we also need to generate surplus resources in order to keep pace both with growing demand and new technologies. The intimate link between quality research and quality health care is well established. Productive research needs to be rooted in patient-based experience, even as sound practise must be informed by new knowledge. The two dimensions are mutually dependent. This combination of informed practise and creative research will also provide an ideal context for superior medical education— and thus for building an expanded corps of accomplished medical professionals here in Jammu. The mission of the Heart Centre is to grapple with this impending Asian epidemic. The new centre will be ideally positioned to address such issues. The Centre also plans to offer specialised fellowship training in cardiology—training now available only at the Govt. Medical College, Jammu. Our goal is to assemble multidisciplinary teams in fields such as open-heart surgery, angioplasty, etc. All of these resources will be accessible to those who cannot normally afford them. During the function, Dr. C.D. Gupta, Former Professor and Head, Deptt. Of Medicine, GMC, Jammu and Consultant Cardiologist, ASCOMS & Hospital, was honoured in recognition of his dedicated services rendered in the field of Cardiology. According to Dr. Kapil Mohan, Head Strategy – ACC, “We will aim for continuous awareness in Jammu and Kashmir.” This will help the patients reach out to the best-in-class medical facilities on time and get the best treatments for better patient outcomes. Till now, in the span of four months, we have been able to help more than 400 patients and provide them with the best cardiac interventional, medical, and diagnostic services in the city. We hope we can help and reach the lives of many more in the coming years.”
