Jammu, July 22: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget on Tuesday during the Monsoon session, which started today. This session, lasting 19 sittings until August 12, is expected to see the government introduce significant bills, including one to replace the 90-year-old Aircraft Act.
Sitharaman will also present the Economic Survey in Parliament today. Earlier, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had called a meeting with the floor leaders of all political parties to understand the issues they wish to raise during the session.
The BJD, led by former Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik, has announced its intention to play the role of a strong opposition in Parliament and aggressively raise issues concerning the state’s interests. Patnaik has urged his MPs to demand special category status for Odisha.
This week, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh stated that the opposition would oppose any move by the government to reduce its stake in public sector banks below 51%. The government is planning to amend the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, and other laws.
In addition to the Finance Bill, the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill is also listed for introduction, consideration, and passing. This bill aims to bring clarity and convergence in the roles of various organizations in the field of disaster management.
The new Bhartiya Vayuyan Vidheyak, 2024, will replace the Aircraft Act of 1934 to promote ease of doing business in the civil aviation sector. The session, beginning on July 22, will conclude on August 12.
Other bills set to be introduced and passed include the Boilers Bill, Coffee (Promotion and Development) Bill, and Rubber (Promotion and Development) Bill. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has constituted the Business Advisory Committee (BAC), which decides the parliamentary agenda. Members of the committee include Sudip Bandyopadhyay (TMC), P P Chaudhary (BJP), Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu (TDP), among others.
