April 7, 2025: The Union government has announced a ₹2 per litre hike in excise duty on both petrol and diesel. As per an official notification, the revised rates will come into effect from April 8, 2025. The excise duty on petrol was increased to ₹13 per litre and that on diesel to ₹10.

Despite the increase, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has assured that retail prices will remain unchanged.

In a tweet shared on X, the Ministry said, “PSU Oil Marketing Companies have informed that there will be no increase in retail prices of petrol and diesel, subsequent to the increase affected in excise duty rates today.”

The government has stated that the hike has been introduced in the public interest. The decision has been made under Section 5A of the Central Excise Act, 1944, and Section 147 of the Finance Act, 2002.
