Srinagar, April 14: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah today came out in support of the immediate release of Kashmir’s top priest Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who is under detention for the past almost four years .
Farooq Abdullah who offered Jumat-ul-Vida ( last Friday of Ramzan) Namaz at world famous white marbled Hazratbal shrine overlooking waters of dal lake , said that it was quite unfortunate that Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has been kept under detention for so long , and he has been deprived of his religious duty to deliver sermons on religiously important days, like today, the last Friday of the holy month of Ramzan .
Jamia Mosque” where Mirwaiz Umar Farooq used to deliver sermons prior to his arrest in August 2019 , coinciding with the abrogation of Article 370 , was shut yet again on Friday . The gates of the mosque were locked by the authorities who feared trouble .
“ If they claim that the situation is normal , he should be released forthwith, and let him perform his religious duties, address the devout and tell them what is their religious duty,” Farooq said.
Farooq Abdullah is the latest to lend his voice supporting release of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq . The Mirwaiz ‘s supporters , religious scholars and political leaders from time to time have been registering their protest against his detention.
