Flight operations at Delhi’s airport have been put on hold due to dense fog and bad weather, news agency PTI reported. Arrivals and departures are largely on hold.

The flight schedule at the Indira Gandhi International Airport was affected from 5:30 am to 7am, according to ANI.

At the time of writing this report, as many as 12 domestic and five international flights were delayed.

Ten trains scheduled to arrive in the national capital were also running late on Friday due to fog and low visibility. On Friday morning, Chopan-Allahabad and Katihar-Hajipur passenger trains were late by two hours and one hour and 30 minutes, respectively.

The minimum temperature in New Delhi was recorded to be 4.2 degrees Celsius on Thursday.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the minimum temperature in the national capital is expected to hover around 5 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature is expected to be 21 degrees Celsius.

The air quality in the national capital region was recorded to be severe on Thursday. This was the third-worst reading this winter.

The air is expected to remain in the severe category till Saturday, Met officials said.

In Delhi-NCR, the government opened many night shelters for the homeless. The shelters are filling to capacity each night.

A cold wave continued to grip other parts of North India too.

Western Uttar Pradesh recorded the lowest temperature in the state at 3.2 degrees Celsius.

In the East, Kolkata registered a maximum of 25 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 12 degrees Celsius.

The mercury fell further as one travelled towards the North-East. In Guwahati, the minimum temperature was recorded to be 9 degrees Celsius. The Met department predicted similar temperature conditions to prevail in the region.

Weather conditions were relatively comfortable in the western and southern regions in the country. The maximum temperature in Mumbai was recorded to be 33 degrees Celsius. The country’s financial capital registered a minimum of 17 degrees Celsius.

Down South, Chennai registered maximum and minimum temperatures of 29 and 21 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh are experiencing heavy snowfall. The weather department has predicted that the region will continue to get battered by the elements for the next few days.

IMD’s Jammu and Kashmir Divisional Commissioner said on Thursday that an active western disturbance is likely to affect the state between January 19 and 25, as a result of which the region may experience moderate to heavy snowfall. The commissioner has warned that the snowfall may lead to disruption of surface and air transportation.
