Ever since Iran was hit by American-Israeli strikes on Saturday – February 28- resulting in the death of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei , questions have been asked about the Indian position on the issue . That is that where does India stand in these unprecedented crisis in West Asian region where conflict is widening for the past one week or so.

Basically, this question has cropped up because India is one of the top emerging super power. The world looks toward it for guidance and solution-making processes in the times of the heightened conflict . The conflict is now touching almost entire Middle-East . It is a high-stake region for India. It has its own strategic and economic importance for the country and also because there are nine million and above Indians residing or working there .

All the doubts were removed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing a joint press conference with Finland Alexender Stubb on Thursday ( March 05, 2026) that “ no issue can be resolved through military conflict . Whether in Ukraine or in West Asia , we will continue to support every effort aimed ay the early end of the conflict.”

This statement is an echo of what Prime Minister has maintained from the very beginning of his innings that dialogue and diplomacy were the best answers to the violent crises anywhere in the world.

That is where India has offered its services in playing a role of a power that can work to bring the warring countries to table and resolve the issues. There is a clarity in this principle that wars , short or long , end at the table only . The era when battlefields used to decide the victor and vanquished is over .

It is also time that some critical parts should be studied in depth before raising questions as per certain contrived perceptions or otherwise. India is a global player , it is member of G 20 , special invitee at G7, Quad, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation , in fact leader of global south . At the same time it has signed multilateral strategic and trade pacts with European Union and other nations across the world.

A look at the history of Iran’s nuclear programme and west would serve a great deal of purpose. The 2015 Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action ( JCPOA) was negotiated between Iran and P5 plus One, a group consisting of five Permanent Members of the UN Security Council – the United States , United Kingdom, France , Russia and China- plus Germany. The European Union also was part of the negotiations. Iran, under the deal , had agreed to restrictions on its nuclear programme to ensure that remained peaceful. That time Barack Obama was the US president . Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had warned against the deal. He said that Iran would never keep its nuclear programme peaceful.

The P5+1 had negotiated limitations in exchange of the sanctions relief . That was the right way of doing things , but the US withdrew from the contract , prompting Iran to go by the way it had been doing before signing of JCPOA) So, in short, the matter is between these powers.

India since it became the nuclear power has been advocating for peaceful use of nuclear programmes in energy generation , and it is committed to no-first use in the eventuality of any untoward situation . Contrary to its stand, Pakistan that had conducted nuclear explosions in May 1998 to match the Indian capabilities , has no such intent . In fact, its leaders have stated it several times that the nuclear weapons were not meant to be fired in celebratory occasions.

In the given situation , which is quite dangerous for the world peace and economy , India is in a position to build bridges . That can transform the scenario .
