Srinagar, Dec 20: In a startling revelation, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) CID Imtiyaz Hussain of the Jammu and Kashmir police has voiced his shock and dismay after being denied a loan by HDFC Bank, claiming that the bank has a discriminatory policy against granting loans to policemen.
Expressing his frustration on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), SSP Imtiyaz Hussain revealed that he applied for a personal loan at HDFC Bank, only to discover that the bank allegedly has a policy of not providing loans to individuals in the police force. In his tweet, he emphasized that the treatment meted out to those who serve the nation day and night is “hurtful and insulting” and should be unacceptable to every citizen.
The revelation sparked a wave of responses from netizens, with some claiming similar experiences involving journalists and lawyers who were reportedly denied loans by HDFC Bank. The online backlash highlighted the shock over the treatment of individuals who play crucial roles in safeguarding the public.
Several other police officers and journalists shared their experiences of being denied loans by HDFC Bank, stating that the bank has a policy against providing loans to individuals in their respective professions. One anonymous senior police officer with over two decades of experience mentioned that there has not been a single instance of a J&K Police official defaulting on an HDFC Bank loan.
Imtiyaz Hussain further detailed that he quickly secured a loan from J&K Bank, raising questions about HDFC Bank’s alleged discriminatory practices. He argued that discrimination based on profession contradicts the fundamental right to equality and asserted that the notion of policemen being wilful defaulters is unfounded.
Responding to the controversy, HDFC Bank Care assured that there is no such policy in place and expressed regret over Hussain’s experience. The bank claimed that many policemen across the country are valued customers who have availed loans successfully.
In a follow-up post, DIG South Kashmir Mohammad Rayees Bhat expressed shock at the existence of such a policy, especially in the era of credit reporting through agencies like CIBIL. The senior police officer emphasized that profiling individuals based on their profession goes against the principles of equality enshrined in the constitution.
Imtiyaz Hussain clarified that he raised the issue not just for personal grievance but to shed light on a practice that contradicts the democratic and constitutional values of the country. He urged against categorizing all policemen under the same label and advocated for fair treatment based on individual merit rather than professional affiliation.
