The Union Home Ministry has said the highest-ever rise in the tally was caused as some states released old data on Monday.

New Delhi, May 5:

India on Tuesday registered a sudden spike in the number of novel coronavirus cases. Within the last 24 hours, India reported 3,900 new cases of the novel coronavirus, taking the national tally to 46,433.

The Union Home Ministry has said the highest-ever rise in the tally was caused as some states released old data on Monday. “Some states had not been reporting Covid-19 cases timely. Timely reporting and management of cases is very crucial, but we found gaps in the data reported by some states. After due persuasion, the states filled in the gaps. This is the reason for the sudden spurt in the number of cases since yesterday,” Lav Aggarwal, joint secretary, the health ministry said.

As per the ministry’s data, the number of active Covid-19 cases in India stands at 32,138. With 195 deaths in the last 24 hours, the nationwide death toll has reached 1,568 while 12,726 patients have recovered. Over 1,000 since Monday.

Lav Aggarwal said that the national recovery rate has climbed further to 27.41 per cent.

The health ministry official, however, urged the people to contribute in arresting the coronavirus spread. “As we relax the lockdown, every citizen should contribute to breaking the chain of transmission, as part of his/her social responsibility, by following all precautionary measures,” he said.

Rational use of PPE

Lav Aggarwal also informed the media that the ministry has issued fresh additional guidelines for rational use personal protective equipment (PPE) by health workers and other personnel, in non-Covid-19 hospitals and non-COVID treatment areas in Covid hospitals.

“The additional guidelines provide use of PPE according to the risk profile of the area in each type of hospital setting. Full complement of PPE is required in high-risk areas, triple-layer medical mask and examination glove in low-risk areas,” he said.
