After a spate of terror attacks in Jammu , the narrative on and for the region refocused on the fresh threats emanating from across the border. This was expected and its genuine too both in terms of technicalities and need of the situation because the expansion of terrorism can undo all what has been achieved in J&K in the past five years. Kashmir Valley would not stay untouched despite its peace and normalcy signified by tourism boom.
This moment calls for a lot of thought for the strategic to counter terrorism , and how to stop it from growing . The anger is genuine , but what is not required is to cast Jammu as a dangerous place where the normalcy is facing an existential threat . That would be walking into the tarp of Pakistan that wants to impact the region’s thinking on these lines.
As it has been seen in the recent weeks, perhaps even for months now, that the army, police and paramilitary forces have started re-strategizing their moves to curb infiltration from across the International Border and Line of Control .That the situation required an undiluted attention and action in the region , the new army chief Gen. Upendra Dwivedi visited Rajouri-Poonch belt that runs parallel to LoC within first three days of his assuming office . As he had served as Northern Command chief, Gen. Dwivedi knows all the ins and out of the terrain, challenges , situation , its internal and external dynamics . His observation was more in continuity with his tenure as Northern Command chef and also as the head of 1.3 million force that has to take care of all the externa threats and its fallout on the national security within the country .
Jammu and Kashmir is a traditional theatre to meet these challenges . In fact , it signifies everything that presents a full picture of the challenges and how to turn those into opportunities . Gen. Dwivedi knew that how army had achieved tremendous successes in the past , in which the terrorism was decimated and Pakistan made to realize that it must look back its own backyard . The army is in control of the situation , but there always is a need to do a periodical review and bring in improvement which the changing times require.
That everything is lost just because there were few terror attacks , in which soldiers and civilians lost their lives is a self-defeating narrative . The political parties , especially in the Opposition , must realize that playing up of such politically-motivated expressions induces despondency . This kind of voiceover the incidents should be resisted , in fact, this should not be thought of . The ruling party at the Centre, BJP should also avoid engagement with the opposition on such incidents because that only fuels political confrontation and fuels slugfest among the Indian political spectrum. That is what Pakistan wants .
Now what should Jammu do in the wake of the terror attacks , clearly sponsored and executed by terrorists sent by Pakistan ? Jammu is not just a territory ; it has a history of the centuries to back its claim to being one of the most responsible parts of the country. It has understood enemy’s design . It is not only shifting the focus to south of Pir Panjal in J&K, but also seeking to divide society . It takes services of few individuals by luring them with money and other means and seeks to paint that a community is working against the interests of nation. That again is a trap.
Jammu’s civil society should understand this gameplan of the enemy sitting and operating from across the border . It will have to mobilize all the social forums to neutralize these designs of Pakistan . For that, it is mandatory that Jammu people should come out of the panic mode and show their traditional resilience to defat designs of Pakistan . It will help army and police to do their job better .
