JK News Today Analysis

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made it plain at the G7 summit in Evian, France, on Tuesday that the world cannot progress if a partnership lacks trust. That should set the tone for repairing the world order jolted by several conflicts ,the most recent of them being the US-Iran conflict , which belatedly and mercifully has shown signs of ending . A formal agreement is awaited.
Modi’s remarks at the Outreach Session on ‘ Forging New Partnerships and Rebuilding International Solidarity “ at the summit provided a framework for the world to come out of the dark times it has walked into because of conflict. .This statement , in which the thrust is on trust -building, is a guideline for world leaders to listen to and act upon .
This demonstrated that Prime Minister Modi speaks where it matters the most and is listened to with rapt attention . It is the trait of a world leader who doesn’t believe in making a noise every now and then to grab the headlines . A statesman speaks at the time and place of his choosing to make the world take note of it , and that too when the most powerful global figures are around to learn . It is not the exalted version of PM Modi , but an inescapable reality .
As the timing and the occasion suggested , the Prime Minister made a plea to the world – especially to those powers that believe that they can impose their will on other nations – to build trust to in order to win the trust of others . A vacuum on this critical element can leave the world in a permanent state of conflict .. That may be dangerous for populations across the countries , as economic and political stability could suffer endlessly as a consequence .
In both the technical and strategic sense , neither side involved in the West Asian conflict has emerged victorious . The death and destruction caused by the war conflict never laid the foundations for any victory, nor is any in sight .
Prime Minister Modi chose his words at the G7 summit, where his fellow world leaders , including US President Donald Trump , gathered to tell the nations that world will have to reorient itself toward trust building to stabilize the international order . Partnerships alone cannot deal with the crises tempering the world, particularly during the ongoing conflict in West Asia . Economies have been hit hard , and some countries are unable to meet the needs of their citizens as there has been a disruption to shipments from critical waterways in the conflict-ridden region . India , too is a victim , and suffered greatly because of the conflict .
There are two parts to his remarks. First , he delivered a resounding message to President Trump , who was seated next to him at the high table , that the repeated claims of the Indo-US strategic partnership were violated when the US missiles hit Indian ships in the Strait of Hormuz, killing three of its sailors Modi said in the most subtle but effective manner , without explicitly exactly mentioning the incident. The meaning was more than clear.
Second , it also served as a mirror held up to the West . which had been setting its own standards . in international diplomacy without caring for others . He seemed to be exposing the double standards of these countries vis-à-vis Global South as Modi has become its voice .
The punchlines were :” In a world that is getting more interconnected and interdependent than ever before, this subject becomes all the more vital. But, partnerships can succeed only when they are founded on trust,”, and “ Today the world does not suffer from a shortage of resources; it suffers from a shortage of trust. And the future of our partnerships depends on building this trust.”

The foundational principle Modi underlined was that strategic partnerships should not remain diplomatic clichés ,but rather demand trust in the real sense of the word. This was a call for what he termed a ‘ trust based international order.’ The world has no option but to listen to him and begin working toward this without any delay.
