Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair UN Security Council Open Debate on “Maintenance of international peace and security: Maritime security” in virtual mode on 9th August. External Affairs Ministry said this will be the first time an Indian Prime Minister will preside over Open Debate.

India had on Sunday assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council.

India will focus on peacekeeping and counter-terrorism besides maritime security during its presidency of UN Security Council. It has been president of UNSC in June 1950, September 1967, December 1972, October 1977, February 1985, October 1991, December 1992, August 2011, November 2012.
