New Delhi, March 23:

Rajya Sabha is expected to adjourn sine die after the passage of the finance bill on Monday because of the growing concerns over the spread of coronavirus in the country.

Many opposition parties, including Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena, had decided they would stop attending the House proceedings because of the outbreak of the disease.

“After discussing with leaders of various parties, it is decided House will be adjourned after completion of business of today in the view of Coronavirus related issue,” said Rajya Sabha chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu.

The decision was taken after Naidu met leaders of all political parties to form a consensus view. Soon after Naidu’s announcement, the Upper House took up the discussion of Jammu and Kashmir Appropriation (Number 2) Bill, 2020. Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die after passage of the Finance Bill.

Although the union government was keen that the proceedings of the House continue, the government was under tremendous pressure from both opposition and alliance partners to end the proceedings of Parliament.

“The members who are retiring, as the House will not be in session. House will offer farewell to outgoing members…whoever is retiring can send their names and we will consider it,” Naidu added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi again warned on Monday morning that some people were not taking the threat seriously and they must follow the instructions of government representatives.

“Many people are still not taking the lockdown seriously. Please save yourself, save your family, follow the instructions seriously. I request the state governments to get the rules and laws followed,” PM Modi tweeted on Monday morning.
