Mendhar, 15 January 2026: Raqeeq Ahmed Khan, Spokesperson of the JK Apni Party, has strongly demanded the immediate establishment of a Municipality in Mendhar while launching a scathing attack on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for what he described as continued neglect and failure to address the civic miseries of the people.
Raqeeq Ahmed Khan said it is highly unfortunate that Mendhar, despite being a major tehsil headquarters in the border district of Poonch, remains without a municipal system. “Every rainy season, rainwater enters shops, causing heavy financial losses to shopkeepers, while the administration remains a mute spectator,” he said.
He further stated that the situation worsens after evening hours. “It is shameful that after 5:00 PM, most parts of Mendhar are left in darkness due to non-functional street lights. This exposes the false claims of development made by the Chief Minister,” he added.
The JK Apni Party spokesperson asserted that the absence of a Municipality is the root cause of unplanned development, poor drainage, lack of sanitation, and non-existent accountability. “Without a municipal body, there is no responsibility, no transparency, and no system to address public grievances,” he said.
Criticising CM Omar Abdullah, Raqeeq Ahmed Khan remarked that governance cannot be run through press conferences and slogans. “Border towns like Mendhar are consistently ignored. Development must reach the ground, not remain confined to files and speeches,” he said.
He demanded that the government immediately notify a Municipality for Mendhar, ensure a proper drainage network to prevent flooding during rains, and restore street lighting to ensure safety and dignity for the people.
“The people of Mendhar are united in one voice. We demand our right to development and dignified living. A Municipality is not a luxury—it is a necessity,” he warned.
