Srinagar, January 06:

Recent snowfall is a boon for the people of Kashmir as it will ensure lot of much needed water during summers, which is good for crops and fruits.

Kashmir Valley has experienced heavy snowfall in all its parts, ranging from the mountains to the plains. It is seen as a good omen because of snow fall during “Chille Kalan”, the severest winter period that starts from December 21 to January 30 freezes and has a long life, and when it melts it brings lot of water in the rivers and rivulets.

“It is a good omen,” said Sonam Lotus, Director of the Indian Metrological Department based in Srinagar.

Lotus who had been acknowledged and hailed as the perfect forecaster of weather in Kashmir after he had predicated a heavy spell of rains that had caused once in a century devastating floods in the Valley in September 2014, told JKNEWS Today that the current spell of the snowfall is a “boon for Kashmir in the long run.”

Explaining it, Lotus said, that the frozen snow, when it becomes ice in the mountains, it is a guarantee of good flow of fresh water in the rivers, and that, in turn is helpful for the good growth of agriculture and horticulture sectors and also maintains the rich forest cover.

All these combined, Lotus said, are good for the health and the economy of Kashmir because the water in the rivers and snow in mountains attract tourists. That again, he said, is good for the economy.

Sonam Lotus is said that the water is the main source of Kashmir’s beauty and economy.
