Chandan Negi, an eminent and widely admired writer, passed away on 5th November 2025, leaving behind a rich and enduring literary legacy.
She began her illustrious career at Radio Station Jammu, where her eloquence and insight made her a beloved host of discussions and cultural programs. Her journey with words soon found a deeper expression through writing — beginning with short stories that beautifully captured the emotions and realities of everyday life.
Deeply connected with the Ladies Club Jammu and the Red Cross, she remained actively engaged in social and cultural causes throughout her life.
As a versatile and prolific author, Chandan Negi penned 11 collections of short stories, 6 novels, an autobiography, and 13 translated works, covering languages as diverse as Dogri, English, Hindi, and Shahmukhi into Punjabi. She also authored two books in Hindi, and her monumental contribution — the Dogri–Punjabi Shabad Kosh — is soon to be released in Jammu.
Her literary brilliance earned her numerous honours, including the Hinditar Bhashi Rashtriya Award from the Honourable President of India, the Sahitya Akademi Award for her translation of Himanshu Joshi’s Tere Layee, the Nanak Singh Fiction Award, the Shiromani Sahitkar Samman, the Sahit Puruskar, and many more — each recognising her outstanding contribution to Punjabi literature and translation.
Her association with Jammu dated back to her early childhood, when she migrated there with her family from Pakistan. Her deep affection for Dogri language and Jammu’s culture became the emotional foundation of much of her work, reflected vividly in her novels and stories.
Chandan Negi’s passing marks the end of an era — but her words, compassion, and creative spirit will continue to inspire generations of readers and writers for years to come.
